Honoring The Fathers

I recently had the privilege to be ministering in Brooklyn, New York on Father’s Day. The Bible says in Romans, chapter 13, verse 7, to give honor to whom honor is due. In our nation we take time to honor our fathers on Father’s Day each June.

I want to honor Pastor Rodger McPhail, a spiritual father and the pastor of Gateway Christian Fellowship. I want to bless him today for what you have done by way of ministering to the Body of Christ for so many years. I honor Pastor Rodger as a man of God and a spiritual father. The Body of Christ needs more true spiritual fathers like him. My spiritual father, my pastor, is in Kansas City. His name is Pastor Alan Koch. I take time to honor him now as well as a true spiritual father to many for many years.

Know Your Fathers

Today I want to share a brief message with you about fathers. Recently I have begun to really feel the glory on a lot of classic rock. Today I want to share three short testimonies about the fathers; but first I want you to consider a song called “Father and Son,” written by Cat Stevens in 1970. It is a conversation between a father and a son. I want you to find that song and listen to it. Think about your father and when you were a young person. The song is about the father trying to impart wisdom to the son. The son sees all of the things in the world and he wants to go out and experience them for himself, sort of like the prodigal son and the father. That song touches my heart. My father has gone on to be with Jesus. I would encourage you to know your fathers.

I think about my father, Miro Basconi, he was Italian. My grandfather came through Staten Island in 1902. He saw the Statue of Liberty back then. When he came through with his papers from Italy, he had three options. There was one man who was from the orchards in California offering 75 cents a day. There was another man from Pittsburg offering 95 cents a day to work in the steel mills. And there was another man who was offering 1 dollar a day to work in the coal mines in West Virginia. So he went to West Virginia because he got a nickel more a day. My grandfather and my father, a product of my grandfather, were both Italian and Catholics.

My father tried to give me wisdom to help me as I grew older. I was indoctrinated into the Catholic religion. I was raised with this motto: if you work hard enough, any problem you have will go away. That was difficult for me because like the young man in the song, I wanted to go away and see the world. I had my own dreams. I didn’t want to work in the coal mines. My father worked hard so I could go to college. My father passed away; he literally worked himself to death. On his death bed, the presence and glory of God came in and he prayed to receive Jesus Christ as his Savior right before he went on to heaven. The glory and presence of God filled that room and I know without a doubt my father is in heaven. I have two of them up there now.

Spiritual DNA

I want you to understand that our fathers are very special. We receive our natural DNA and our spiritual DNA from our fathers. Maybe your father is no longer living. If you father is living, I encourage you to honor your fathers—your biological fathers and your spiritual fathers—because we don’t have many spiritual fathers in the Body of Christ at this hour.

By the grace of God, I have ministered in many churches throughout the world. As I have traveled I have discovered there does not seem to be very many true spiritual fathers today. Something is missing. The more I travel, the more I find this dynamic is true. The enemy wished to destroy the relationship that we have with our fathers. But God wants to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the hearts of the children to the fathers.

I want to look at some important scriptures with you now. I will go to the first epistle of John, chapter 2. Remember, this was written by John the Revelator; the one who loved Jesus, the one whom Jesus loved, the man who laid his head on the chest of Jesus and heard His breath and His heart beat. He had such a close and intimate relationship with the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ, when He walked upon the earth. Later in life he writes these letters to us, these epistles that are still living—a living word. In 1 John, chapter 2, verse 1, he writes:

My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.

We do have a heavenly Father who loves us, who cares for the littlest things in our life. And thank God, through the finished work of Jesus we can have a relationship with our heavenly Father.

In verses 2 and 3, John the Revelator goes on and says:

And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. Now by this we know that we know Him [God the Father and God the Son], if we keep His commandments.

The Perfect Passion of Christ

I was meditating upon this recently and wondering about this supernatural dynamic. As we look at Jesus, the finished work of Jesus Christ—the perfect Passion of Christ as He died upon the tree, as He died upon the cross of Calvary, as He laid down His life for His friends: you and I—He gave us a way to have a relationship with our heavenly Father.

The word here translated “propitiation” meaning “appeasement” or “atonement” in the Greek is similar in use to a Hebrew word meaning “covering.” What it is referring to is the lid of the mercy seat. The cherubim were there stationed on the lid of the mercy seat. The priests placed the blood on the lid of the mercy seat, and it’s the blood that makes atonement for us so we can be in a right relationship with God. God so loved us that He gave His only begotten Son (John 3:16) so we can have a relationship with our heavenly Father.

I have discovered over the years that not all of us understand we can have relationship with our heavenly Father. But through Jesus we have propitiation for our sins. Jesus made atonement for our sins; He gave us covering for our sins. The concept is that He gave us redemption or made us in right relationship with our heavenly Father. We have access to our Father in heaven. We need to get the revelation that just as our earthly father wants to sow blessings upon us; our heavenly Father also wants to bestow blessings on us.

I want to encourage you as we celebrate Father’s Day, we want to honor our earthly father and we want to honor our spiritual fathers but we also want to honor and recognize our heavenly Father because He has blessings for us.

In 1 John 2, verses 4 and 5, we read:

He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.

This “Him” is God the Father, the Creator. That’s the Father’s nature; He created us in His image. That’s what the Bible says in the Book of Genesis, chapter 1, verses 26 and 27: we are created in the image of God—God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. God said, “Let Us make man in Our image.”

Looking back to 1 John 2, verse 6, it says: “He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.” I want to talk about this in reference to our relationship with our fathers. My relationship with my father was strained. My whole life I never could seem to please my father; I couldn’t work hard enough. Again, I have a genealogy of being and Italian American. I am also an adopted Navajo and a genealogical Cherokee, but I also have the tradition of the Italian American heritage. There was an unwritten law in my family which was that you should work very hard. And praise God for that work ethic; it’s good, but it’s not necessarily a Kingdom mindset; it’s a natural mindset.

It’s Not Too Late

We can have discord and misunderstandings with our earthly fathers; but the word of God demands that we honor them. Throughout my whole life I never honored my father the way I should have spiritually. Perhaps because I did not want to receive the works mentality and ethics he was seeking to instill in me? I want to encourage you that maybe you haven’t honored your father (for whatever reason) the way you feel you should have. Some of us have this gaping hole in us and just feel like maybe we didn’t treat our father right when he was alive; we didn’t honor him. I believe that’s the Spirit of God welling up within us.

Here’s the thing: it’s not too late. Even if your father has gone on to be with Jesus, you can still honor your father. This can bring a healing to our soul, which is a great miracle when our soul is made whole. Some people call that soul healing or healing of the soul. Psalm 23 says He restores our soul (v. 3). Some of us have issues or wounds in our soul because we haven’t honored our fathers and they have gone on; they may have passed away, they may have died. But we can still honor them on this side of eternity. Why is that possible? Because the Bible says in Hebrews, chapter 13, verse 8: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”

I know without a shadow of a doubt that my earthly father is in heaven. And, therefore, because there is no time in the spiritual dimension I can still honor my earthly father because he’s not dead; the Bible says to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8). The Book of Hebrews calls this the great cloud of witnesses (12:1). I believe specifically on days like Father’s Day that members of the great cloud of witnesses who were fathers are looking at their children. They are rooting for us; they are cheering us on. That’s what the Bible says.

In 1 John 2, verses 7 and 8, it says:

Brethren, write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you heard from the beginning. Again, a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining.

He is speaking about the salvation and the redemption and the propitiation of our sins, who is the Man Jesus Christ. Going on in verses 9 through 11, we read:

He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

The Curtain of Darkness

As a young man in college at twenty years old I wrote a poem, and part of that poem was a prayer that I would know God and that people that I came across would know God too. I wrote that “the curtain of darkness that had blinded my brothers searching eyes would be raised that we might know the love of God and see the light”. I wasn’t a Christian. How did that happen? How did I write such a scriptural poem? There was something inside of me that was put there by God. All of you have a DNA that God placed within you. And part of that godly DNA is to honor your father.

Going on with verse 12: “I write to you, little children, Because your sins are forgiven you for His name’s sake.” Wow! Think about that! Our sins are forgiven, the propitiation of our sins through the finished work of Jesus. Now verse 13:

I write to you, fathers, Because you have known Him who is from the beginning. write to you, young men, Because you have overcome the wicked one. I write to you, little children, Because you have known the Father.

A Son

I want to encourage you—t doesn’t matter how old are—you can still grow to know your father in heaven much more intimately. You can always grow closer to your father. I was invited once to speak, and I was asked to send a biography so they could put some advertising together for the event. My biography is pretty simple: it says that Kevin Basconi is an ordinary man who loves an extraordinary God.

So the pastor called me awhile late and asked me, “Kevin, can you send me another biography?” I said, “Why?” He says, “Well, your biography is pretty boring.” I responded “Why would you say that?” He said, “Well, aren’t you a pastor or prophet? Aren’t you a teacher? Aren’t you an evangelist? Aren’t you an apostle? What are you? Nobody wants to come to see an ordinary man.” I thought about that for a second and I said, “Well, okay. Here’s what you can say; write down that I am a son.”

Here’s the thing: if you are a son, you can always grow closer to your father. I praise God for pastors; but sometimes people put us into categories and that’s all we will ever be to them. But when you become a son, you can always grow closer to your father.

Now verse 14

I have written to you, fathers, Because you have known Him who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, Because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, And you have overcome the wicked one.

There is a place as men and women of that we overcome the wicked one through the word. The word, of course, is the physical manifestation of Jesus. The word bears witness.

Verse 15:

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

I have been thinking about this: What does that mean; “the love of the Father”? There is a love of the Father that is different than the love of the Son and the love of the Holy Spirit. Elohim, the Creator, God the Father, wants to bless us with spiritual blessings. The Bible says there are spiritual blessings in heavenly places for us (Ephesians 1:3), and we can access those. I want to know the love of the of my heavenly Father so much more. How about you?

On Father’s Day three years ago, I was in my prayer room in Moravian Falls when the Lord spoke to me. Please hear my heart; this may sound extra-biblical but it is true for me. That is, I can recognize the difference in the voice of the Holy Spirit, in the voice of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the voice of the Father. They speak to me differently at different times; usually not all at once.

The Father spoke to me and said, “Kevin, I want to go shopping with you on Father’s Day.” And so, it was a most glorious experience. I got into my car and I drove into the city and shopped with my Papa. And it was like the Father was right there with me. He was in the car, in the mall, in the restaurant, and He was just loving on me. I knew the love of the Father that day more than at any time in my life. He helped me to pick out my Father’s Day present. You want to know what it was? A GoPro camera. It was nice. Sometimes the Father goes snorkeling with me. I’m talking to you about knowing the Father and the love of the Father. It’s a real thing.

Let’s go to verses 16-19 of 1 John 2:

For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that theAntichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour.They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.

Now verse 20: “But you have an anointing [unction] from the Holy One, and you know all things.” This is part of the love of the Father. God so loved the world He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus. Jesus Christ came to give us atonement or propitiation for our sins so that we could have a relationship with Holy Spirit. After He ascended (Acts 1:9) and sat at the right hand of the Father, Jesus prayed the Father; and the Father sent the Holy Spirit. And because of the precious Holy Spirit, we can have the unction of the Holy Spirit or the anointing of the Holy Spirit and we can know our Father.

Know Your Father

My prayer for you today is that the Holy Spirit would rise up within you and you would know your heavenly Father and you would know the love your heavenly Father has for you and that you would know and understand and receive and walk in the blessings that God the Father ordained for you to walk in as a son or daughter.

Again in 1 John 2, verse 20, it says, “But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.” This means you have a special grace, you have anointing. What that means is that you will understand or things will be rendered plainly to you or manifested or shown to you. So the love of the Father can be displayed for us so that we can comprehend it.

Going on with verses 21 through 23, we read:

I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and that no lie is of the truth. Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son.Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father either; he who acknowledges the Son has the Father also.

Honor Your Spiritual Fathers

So I am writing this article on Father’s Day. I want to encourage you to meditate upon everything that Jesus restored to us through His finished work, that we can have access, that we can have relationship with our heavenly Father. We need to honor our spiritual fathers. We need to honor our earthly fathers. However, sometimes in the midst of our busy society and lives we forget about our heavenly Father. I want to encourage you when you lie down upon your bed tonight, when you lie down and rest to contemplate about this; to contemplate on what the Lord Jesus Christ accomplished for us through His finished work on the cross through His shed blood to make atonement or propitiation for us that we can have a covering, that we can know our Father in a personal relationship.

I was speaking to a precious man the other day, and he was asking me what religion I was. I told him I was the same denomination as Jesus, which I am. And I have learned over my brief time in ministry, I haven’t ministered for decades like some pastors and leaders; but in my brief fifteen years I have discovered that at times some people use denominational barriers to cause division.  Denominational barriers can be used as an argument as to why they can’t accept what you believe or what you want to share with them from the scripture, which for me is the love of God.

I believe there will be times when we will see amazing people from many different denominations in heaven. I don’t think heaven is going to be segregated, like New York. We aren’t going to have a Bronx and a Brooklyn and a Manhattan, and a Staten Island. We aren’t going to have a Baptist part of heaven. We aren’t going to have a Lutheran part of heaven. We aren’t going to have a Catholic part of heaven. We aren’t going to have a Pentecostal part of heaven. We are just going to have heaven! God doesn’t look at us through those barriers. We put that up ourselves.

See Him as He Really Is

I really sense that the Lord wants us to see Him as He really is. So let me talk to you about one of the blessings the Father wants to give to you. Let’s move over to 1 John, chapter 3: “Behold what manner of love [agape love] the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!” Wow! Think about that! Put your hand on your head and say that: I am a son or daughter of God. Think about that! God the Father, my Father, my Daddy, Abba Father; I am His child; I am His son or daughter. We need to begin to think like that. Our Daddy owns the whole world. Our Daddy owns all the potatoes under all the hills. He has all the gold, all the silver. If you read the Book of Haggai, it tells you He owns all the gold and the silver. Haggai 2:8; “The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts”.

The Father’s Blessings

There’s a study that was done about children of billionaires. They don’t think the way most people think. They don’t see things as impossible. They believe they can accomplish anything because of their father’s ability to help them. They see that. As Christians we would call that kind of fatherly help blessings

So we need to be able to look at our heavenly Father as a multibillionaire. There is nothing impossible with God. I don’t care what you are called to do on this earth in reference to ministry and your calling from the Kingdom of God. Many of us don’t achieve it because we look at it from our humanistic mindset: I can’t do that. Well, maybe you can’t. But that’s a good signal that what God is calling you to do is really from Him; because with God’s help, with the Father’s help, you can. Sometimes I say this; when God gives the vision He provides the provision! We just need to learn to believe and trust our heavenly Father!

The Father’s Perspective

So begin to look at things from the Father’s perspective; the things you are called to, those impossibilities in your life maybe that keep your family from not walking with the Lord the way you would like to see them, maybe the financial burdens you have—maybe it’s the mortgage, maybe it’s the car payment, maybe you can’t break out of the cycle of renting. You want to buy a home but you see it as impossible. Look at it from your Father’s perspective.

We just had a precious woman from Ohio who came to one of our events. She heard a prophetic word and choose to believe it and began to thank God for it coming to pass in her life! She was in debt; she was about to lose her home. There was a prophetic decree that came forth from the Spirit of God that the Lord was going to release checks; these checks would come in the mail and people would get blessed. The prophetic word was specific; there was someone in the meeting that was about to lose their home, there was going to be a supernatural rescue, and God was going to help them out. This woman came to us later and said, “Hey, I was in Cincinnati and this was what happened. She brought a photostat of a check for $43,000 dollars that came in the mail. She believed and she received!

God rescued her. That’s our Dad! What’s impossible with man is not impossible with God. So we need to know the love of our heavenly Father. What He did for her, He can do for you; whatever the situation is. I’m just using that as one example. It doesn’t matter what it looks like. It doesn’t matter what in your life looks like it’s dead, it’s not dead; it’s only sleeping.

Honor Your Father and Your Mother

Turn with me to the Book of Exodus, chapter 20. Most of you know that this passage of scripture is what is called the Ten Commandments. Verse 12 says,

Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you.

It’s not something that we might need to do; it’s a commandment of the Lord. Some people say, “Yeah, Kevin, but that’s Old Testament. We are under a new covenant.” But remember, Jesus said in Matthew 5:18 that not one jot or tittle of the Law or the Torah would pass away. This is one of the Ten Commandments that has a promise with it. When we honor our father and our mother, God promises us long life. I have observed this; I have looked at this. When people honor their earthly parents, they have amazing lives; God prospers everything they put their hand to (Deuteronomy 28:8,12); everything they put their hand to the heavenly Father blesses.

A  Wonderful Savior

But sometimes when people treat their fathers and their mothers poorly, they have very difficult lives.  There is a very real correlation in this passage of scripture—Exodus 20:12—and the quality of people’s lives. Now there’s good news. We have a wonderful Savior who gave us propitiation for our sins. Maybe you haven’t honored your mother or your father the way you should. You can repent. And the blood of Jesus will make you righteous and holy. The blood of Jesus will put you in the place where you need to be spiritually.

Maybe your mother and father were not really good to you. Maybe they didn’t treat you well. Maybe you were abused. Maybe you just can’t bring yourself to forgive that mother or father who took advantage of you in whatever way that might be. You need to learn and allow the Holy Spirit to well up within you so that you can forgive your mother or father so that you might have a blessed life. Unless you can forgive them, you can’t honor them. Does that make sense?

I can remember times when I didn’t want to celebrate Father’s Day. I didn’t want to do it. I didn’t want to hear my father’s advice like the song I mentioned earlier of the father and the son. The father was always telling the son what he should do and what he shouldn’t do. I didn’t want to hear it. I wanted to do what Kevin wanted to do. As I look back on it, I realize that if I had listened to my father, if I had honored my father, if I had paid attention to what he said and done those things, I would have most likely avoided thirty-one years of a terrible life.

For those of you who don’t know, for thirty-one years I was a drug addict basically living in the street before I was born from above. I went through terrible things; it either would have been hell or jail for me. But, praise God, I fell down at an altar and I received Jesus Christ as my Savior and was instantly delivered. But had I honored my father, had I listened to my father, I believe the Lord would have put this dynamic of Exodus 20:12 in my life and I would have prospered. Because it just seemed like everything I tried to do, such as a job, the rug got pulled out from under me. My cars would fall apart. My roof would leak. My bank account would just disappear. I never could put a thousand dollars together; poof, it would just disappear.

I’m using myself as an example; I’m being transparent. I did not honor my parents and there were repercussions. The dynamics and the spiritual principles in the word of God are true. You can’t choose. You can’t decide between a, b, and c. You can’t pick and choose what you want to do and what you don’t want to do in the word of God. The Scriptures are yes and amen, they are black and white. The spiritual principles in the bible apply to all to each of our lives; all of the spiritual principles in the bible. Period.

Maybe you are reading this and you have never honored your mother and father. You can start right now. You can make a conscious decision to honor your father, and you can transform your life. Maybe your father is no longer on this side of eternity. Maybe he’s passed on. You can still honor him.

Honor Your Heavenly Father

In addition to honoring our earthly fathers, I want to encourage you today to honor your heavenly Father. This morning in the secret place of the shower in my hotel, the presence and the glory of God fell on me. I began to pray in the Spirit and honor my father: my earthly father, who no longer lives upon the earth, and my heavenly Father. I began to pray in the Spirit. I began to pray in the Spirit with understanding that

Today, Lord, I am honoring You as my Father. Today, Lord, I am saying whatever Your will is for my life, Lord, let it be done.

That’s what Jesus did to honor His heavenly Father. Do you remember that in the Book of Luke 3? God the Father spoke a blessing over His Son. He said, “This is My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.” Think about this one: God the heavenly Father honored His earthly Son Jesus who gave us propitiation for our sins before Jesus had ever performed one miracle or preached one sermon. All Jesus was doing was submitting to John the Baptist for baptism. He was submitting His life. God the Father said, “This is My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.” Well pleased in what? Well pleased in that He recognized His Father. Well pleased in that He submitted His life to God. It’s not by works, it’s by grace.

I sense the heavenly Father is smiling down upon all of you reading this right now; and He is saying, “You are My beloved child in whom I am well pleased.” I want to encourage you to take some time today to honor your heavenly Father. Think about what being His son or daughter entails.

Saved From What

When my father, Miro, went on to be with Jesus, he had been not an unbeliever, not a practicing Catholic, but he never saw the need for salvation. I remember times when witnesses would come to our home and they would tell my father that he needed to be saved. He would say, “I need to be saved from what?” He went through a world war II. He worked in the coal mines. He literally worked himself to death. But in that hospital room on his death bed, with his last few breaths he realized that there was a God who loved him. He realized that Jesus Christ was the Savior. He realized that he needed propitiation for his sins. And the presence and the glory of God came in, and smiled and my sister led him in a prayer of salvation, and the fragrance of heaven invaded the room, and they all began to weep.

It’s Never Too Late

Why am I telling you that? Well, it’s never too late. It’s never too late for your parents; maybe your parents don’t know the Lord. Maybe you’ve been witnessing to them for decades and they have never received the Lord. It’s never too late. Just believe for the Lord to touch their hearts. Just believe for our heavenly Father to pour out His mercy and grace and love upon our family. Sometimes that just comes by honoring.

After I received the Lord as my Savior, I began to realize I needed to honor my father; but I didn’t know how to do it. I would go to him and I would visit with him, but our relationship was still strained. My father never told me he loved me; never once in my whole life. I never heard my father say, “I love you.” My father never came to see me when I played football or baseball. He was always busy working. But, something changed at the end. And I know that one day when I put off this earth suit, (die) I will see my father in heavenly places. He’ll have a new body, and our relationship will be restored.

I want to encourage you to honor your fathers in the Lord, your spiritual fathers. I want to encourage you to honor your earthly father. Our heavenly Father, Elohim, the Creator of heaven and earth, loves you and cherishes you; He looks at you like a precious jewel, as a son or daughter of God.

I want to bless you with the Fathers blessing as I share this passage of scripture in conclusion; Numbers, chapter 26, verses 22-26:

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘This is the way you shall bless the children of Israel. Say to them:“The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace.”’

That’s my prayer for you today; that the blessings of the Father shall rest upon your life and that you would understand it’s never too late to honor your earthly father and it’s never too late to honor your heavenly Father.
